No, you will not be entitled for salary when you are on leave. During the on-board training period the trainees are paid stipend and not salary.

On gaining the certificate for Second Mate, the officer is eligible to be posted as 2nd or 3rd officer on board a good merchant ship, with good salary. Further sea service renders the officer capable of giving the First Mate (Foreign Going) and Master (Foreign Going) examinations. Passing of the latter exam gives him the certificate of competency to become the Captain of a merchant ship.

STCW (Standards for Training ,Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers ) rules 78/95/2010/16 as an international convention specifically setting standard for seafarers mandatory for every candidate, who want to join maritime industry includes Personal Survival Techniques, Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities, Basic Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, Elementary First Aid courses.
